Joel was born and raised in Cedar City, Utah. He is the son of Kent and Cherie Myers. Joel is a graduate of Cedar High School. He married Coralee Broderick in 1986. They have four children, ages 9 to 19.
Joel attended Southern Utah State College where he majored in Civil Engineering. He transferred to the University of Utah to complete his training and in 1990 received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Soils and Foundations.
Immediately following graduation, Joel accepted an offer with a national geotechnical-engineering firm, Kleinfelder, Inc. Joel worked for Kleinfelder, Inc. in their St. George office for five years. Joel’s position as Staff Engineer offered him valuable experience and training. His responsibilities included both commercial and residential site assessments and geotechnical investigations. In addition to site work, Joel was responsible for a number of field exploration duties such as soil and concrete testing, site inspection and pavement evaluations.
In 1994 Joel prepared for and passed the Professional Engineer’s Examination. He was then promoted to the position of Project Engineer at Kleinfelder, Inc. During that time he worked on a number of large commercial projects, some of which included: the O’Sullivan Manufacturing Plant in Cedar City; River Road Bridge in St George and the Student Center on the campus of Southern Utah University.
Joel was the Chief Engineer and Office Manager for GEO Consultants for 9 years. His scope of work included employee management and training, marketing, bid proposals, site assessments, environmental reports and geotechnical investigations. His role as a professional engineer enabled him to work on many substantial projects in the area including Hamilton Fort – I-15 Box Culvert, Circle Four Farms, Cerro Copper Manufacturing Plant, Zion Transportation System, Downtown Parking Garage, Equestrian Arena, SUU Science Center, Home Depot, cellular towers, and various subdivisions in Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
In January of 2005 Joel started his own firm, GEM Engineering, Inc. His many years of experience in the field of engineering has helped him establish a reputable company that has worked on projects including, The Summit at Brian Head, Charlotte Pipe Factory, Black Diamond Condos, White Bear Condos, Iron Springs Elementary, Three Peaks Elementary, Cedar Middle School, Circle Fours Farms, Providence Center, various water tanks and numerous residential developments in the area.
As a registered professional engineer, licensed in Utah, Arizona, Idaho and Nevada, Joel looks forward to continued growth in this area. He would be happy to meet with you about any upcoming projects. |
